June 13th, Michelle Bachelet left ONU
Today, I briefed @UN_HRC , opening my last session as High Commissioner. I will not be seeking a second term for personal reasons. It is time to go back to Chile & be with family. I urge States to identify common ground to achieve solutions to our shared human rights challenges[1]
| Pese a ello, el mero anuncio de que no asumirá un segundo periodo como alta comisionada de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos y que regresaría a Chile a fines de agosto, generó una serie de movimientos telúricos en el país, y no solo en la derecha –donde su participación en política activa genera terremotos–, sino también al interior de las dos coaliciones de Gobierno: Socialismo Democrático y Apruebo Dignidad. Dentro de la primera coalición, el partido fuerte, el PS, también se vio sacudido, en especial porque su apoyo al Apruebo movería el piso al sector más conservador de la colectividad, donde han sido críticos con el borrador constitucional y esperan inquietos la decisión final de Ricardo Lagos. Ahora bien, por el lado de la dirigencia que hoy tiene el control del Partido Socialista, esperan que formalmente Bachelet pueda asumir un rol activo en la campaña del Apruebo. Todo ello, mientras surgen especulaciones sobre cómo podría influir su figura en la consulta ciudadana del próximo 4 de septiembre, así como si incidirá o no en el fortalecimiento de Socialismo Democrático, en medio de las pugnas con Apruebo Dignidad por el poder al interior de La Moneda.[2]

In spite of this, the mere announcement that she will not assume a second term as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and that she would return to Chile at the end of August, generated a series of catastrophic movements in the country, and not only in the right wing -where her participation in active politics generates earthquakes-, but also within the two government coalitions: Democratic Socialism and Apruebo Dignity. Within the first coalition, the strongest party, the PS, was also shaken, especially because its support to the Apruebo would move the floor of the most conservative sector of the party, where they have been critical with the constitutional draft and are anxiously waiting for the final decision of Ricardo Lagos. Now, on the side of the leadership that currently controls the Socialist Party, they expect that Bachelet could formally assume an active role in the campaign for the approval. All this, while speculations arise on how her figure could influence the citizen consultation of next September 4th, as well as whether or not she will influence the strengthening of Democratic Socialism, in the midst of the struggles with Apruebo Dignidad for power inside La Moneda. |
